“All good things take time, patience, a bit of serendipity, and a strong force of nature.”

I grew up in small towns and moved around a few cities in India, my father served in the government and my mother was a chemistry teacher. Growing up, I was inspired by the perseverance and hard work of my parents, and living in small towns helped me stay connected to the aspirations of middle class India.

I also grew up loving sports. Like many other kids, I harbored dreams of donning the Indian cricket team’s jersey in the early years. Sports gave me some of the most  valuable lessons in life, including – the resolve to go up against all odds, and the spirit of winning as a team.

While in college, I accidently intersected with entrepreneurship. What started off as a simple experiment selling handmade apparel gradually evolved into an idea of a digital marketplace connecting students to colleges offering programs relevant to them. While these ideas eventually came to life and worked out on a small scale, it wasn’t long before I realized that they weren’t designed to make the type of impact I was looking for.

This experience sparked my curiosity about startups, founder journeys, and the market dynamics that have enabled the creation of some of the most iconic technology companies of our era. Nothing has shaped me more. It also led me to recognize the role that venture capital plays in enabling application of ideas at scale and fueling innovation. When the opportunity of becoming a part of the team at Sequoia India (now Peak XV) came by, I jumped in.

Energy, creativity and authenticity.

I feel the energy at the core of entrepreneurship is special. Driving change in large markets often requires one to have deep conviction and be a force of nature to be able to carry teams along and compete with established incumbents. A founder’s energy is the core of this force that enables change.

I also look for creativity in founders, it helps in connecting the dots on their journey and articulating their vision of the future.

A founder’s belief system forms the core of a company’s culture. I connect really well with founders who are authentic about their belief systems, it helps me act as a guiding force on their journeys.

I greatly enjoy working with founders as they embark on the zero-to-one and one-to-10 phases of a company’s journey. Helping them discover these fundamental moves before starting to scale is something I deeply care about. It’s one of the best parts of my job.
