“The difference between failure and long-term success is grit. It’s the fuel that drives innovation and the ability to embrace change.”

When I was growing up, my family moved to a new city every two or three years. My father worked for a government bank and we lived all over the country. My sister and I were constantly being thrown into the deep end. We had to adjust to a new city, a new home, a new school, and build new friendships every couple of years. I was often the outsider who fought hard to fit in. My parents raised us with an independent mindset and encouraged us to embrace differences and all sorts of challenges with rigor. I learned early on how to adapt to change and thrive in uncertainty.

I worked in banking in Germany for many years then joined Sequoia India (now Peak XV) in 2010. I returned to India because I feel very passionate about the country. I’m incredibly optimistic about India’s prospects. So many things are changing, so quickly, and it really feels like ‘now is our time’.

What attracts me to this job is the thrill of building enduring companies, and the deep friendships built through many roller coaster rides.

Becoming a mother was my defining moment. It’s the trampoline I jump on to experience my daily dose of joy, purpose, and light. I encourage my son to stay curious because when curiosity is alive, we discover many worlds.

The thing that gets me most excited about a founder’s pitch is the articulation of their vision, their desire to take on incumbents, and their appetite to solve really big problems. I look for founders who are obsessed with rebooting the Indian dream. I seek the magical combination of ambition, courage, and the dream gene.

I’ve seen a few cycles over the last decade and witnessed a wide variety of startup journeys, with their share of highs, lows, mistakes, and wins. What has always stood the test of time is a founder with a burning ambition to win and a high-performance team built on the shoulders of a well-defined culture.
