Sequoia

“Whoever said 'I’d rather be lucky than smart' didn't realize that the smartest people have an uncanny ability to manufacture luck.”

I’ve been a nerd for as long as I remember. I am happiest when I’m learning something new, or figuring out how something works. In college, I decided that the best way to learn was to skip classes and instead spend my time tinkering with the college computer networks as a part-time systems administrator. I definitely learned more outside the classroom than in it. I moved to the US right after college, and spent a decade in the Bay Area, first as an engineer, and then as a founder. Being a founder is an incredibly formative and humbling experience, and once bitten by that bug there was no going back.

After a quick pit stop at Facebook (which acquired our company), a chance conversation with folks at Sequoia Capital led to me joining the firm in 2013. I always thought that I wanted to be a founder again, and being an investor was never really on the cards. However, I realized quickly that Sequoia Capital was different and special. There was a palpable hunger inside the building, a desire to partner with the best of the best, and a mindset that focused on partnership, company building, and a long-term orientation that is essential in a world with constant ups and downs. That continues to run through Peak XV.

Authentic founders who are just getting started on a business that they want to build for the rest of their lives. I believe that the most iconic companies take time to build, there are no shortcuts to building something meaningful, and that founder market fit is critical, especially in the early years.

I love hearing the why behind the how, and the how behind the what. Why a founder started a business, how the idea came to them, and what drives their conviction and excitement while starting their business. The best founders are insanely curious because curiosity drives growth, and the best founders don’t have a choice but to grow immensely in their startup’s journey.

I spend most of my time with seed and Series A founders, not only because that is the best time to help bend the arc, but also because, selfishly, it helps scratch the founder’s itch within me.
