“Change is the only constant, whether it's the market, business, or people. It's important to focus on the pace of change. The slope matters more than the intercept.”
My father is my biggest inspiration. He worked at one company for over 30 years. He joined as a site engineer, became the CEO, and took the company public. Amongst the many things I have learned from him, the most important is the value of building deep and enduring relationships.
He taught me how to think of relationships in the long-term rather than in a short-term, transactional way. My best investments in life have been the people I know and the relationships I have built. Many important decisions I have made in my life have been driven by people, too. I chose my first job out of IIT, at BCG, because I really connected with the people there. This also played a key role in my decision to return to India after my MBA at Harvard. It was a no-brainer to join the team at Sequoia India for the incredibly kind, caring, and smart people that I share deep relationships with. That’s what really mattered then and matters now to me.
One of the biggest reasons I love working at Sequoia India is that we are in the business of backing people. That’s the magical ingredient for building legendary companies.
On the lookout for
Dreamers. People who are not satisfied with the world the way it is. Those who don’t let what’s available today come in the way of their vision for the future. Those who are so fascinated by possibilities that they almost sound a little delusional. At Sequoia, we call them ‘Believers’.
When I speak with founders, I try to understand if they have the ability to ignore the conventional wisdom and imagine the world as a blank slate, think bottom-up and challenge the status quo. Oftentimes, such founders are contrarian, have unique insights, and have a different view of the future. Working closely with them is the most rewarding part of my day. Dreaming about the various possible versions of the future and the paths that may lead to them is energizing. There are only a few experiences that are more intellectually stimulating than partnering with founders as they build legendary companies that reshape the future of the world.Get in touch with Ishaan
